The Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 requires businesses to separate and recycle food organics and garden organics (FOGO). This is part of the NSW EPA’s goal to halve organic waste sent to landfill by 2030.

NSW Food waste Mandate Timeline

​

• Large businesses (weekly residual waste capacity ≥ 3,840L): must comply by 1 July 2026

• Medium businesses (≥ 1,920L): compliance by 1 July 2028

• Smaller businesses (≥ 660L): compliance by 1 July 2030

• Avoid penalties of up to $250,000 + $25,000 per day for non-compliance
